Trusting God in Battle
Sometimes we go to God, lay everything at the altar… and then we pick it back up again.
We say,
“Lord, I give this to You. I’m handing this over to You. I surrender it.”
But five minutes later we are carrying it again.
Thinking about it.
Worrying about it.
Stressing about it.
Replaying it over and over in our minds.
Obsessing about it.
Trying to fix it.
“I should have done this… maybe I could have done that…”
But when you release something to God, it belongs to Him. You’ve handed it over.
We have to stop taking control of the things we have already given to the Lord.
When Situations Are Outside Your Control
There are situations in life that are simply outside of our control.
We cannot fix them.
We cannot manage them.
We cannot bring closure ourselves.
In those moments, faith means surrender.
Faith means placing the situation into God’s hands and trusting Him to deal with it and bring it to the right outcome.
Now this isn’t spiritual bypassing. It’s not avoiding dealing with the situation by saying, “I’m just giving it to God.”
Because some situations we do have to face, address, explore, and process.
But healthy surrender happens when you recognise something is beyond your power to fix.
So you give it to God and choose to trust Him with it.
For example:
• A legal situation you cannot control
• Someone else’s behaviour you cannot change
• A relationship breakdown where the other person will not engage
• An injustice you cannot resolve yourself
• A financial situation that feels overwhelming
In those moments, surrender is not avoidance.
It’s wisdom.
Faith is not pretending everything is fine.
Faith is knowing when to take responsibility and when to entrust the outcome to God.
Some Battles Take Years to Develop
Some battles we face today have been developing for years.
They didn’t happen overnight.
And sometimes only God can step in and restore what has slowly been broken.
The Bible says:
“Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.”
1 Peter 5:7
What Anxiety Means in the Bible
Some battles can cause anxiety.
Biblically, anxiety means being divided, pulled apart, or distracted by worry.
The original meaning carries the idea of a mind that is split and pulled in different directions.
So anxiety is not just feeling nervous.
It is more like:
• the mind being divided between trust and worry
• being consumed by concern about the future
• carrying burdens that belong to God
That is why Jesus said:
“Do not worry about your life.”
Matthew 6:25
Part of us wants to trust God.
Another part worries about the outcome.
But God promises something different.
God Promises Peace
Philippians 4 says:
“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything, by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
Notice something important.
When we pray, we should begin with thanksgiving.
Thank you Jesus.
Having an attitude of gratitude for all He has done and continues to do.
Thank Him for being:
The God of breakthrough.
The God of miracles.
The God who heals.
The God who protects.
The God who provides.
The God who makes a way where there seems to be no way.
When you begin to thank God like that, something shifts.
You begin to remember His faithfulness.
You begin to remember His goodness.
And before long the thing that was making you anxious begins to lose its power because you are leaning on God’s understanding rather than your own.
When Your Mind Goes Back to the Battle
I have had situations in my own life where things were completely beyond my control.
There was nothing I could do except surrender them to God and trust Him to bring the outcome.
And He did.
But this is where the real challenge comes.
Your mind will try to go back to the situation.
It will replay it.
Fear will try to creep in.
Worry will try to return.
When that happens, you stand on what God’s Word says.
“The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.”
Exodus 14:14
Each time the thought comes back, remind yourself that you have already placed the situation into God’s hands.
Refuse to carry what you have already surrendered.
Standing on the Word of God
Scripture also says:
“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
James 4:7
So when fear comes, you resist it.
When worry comes, you resist it.
When anxiety comes, you resist it.
When doubt comes, you answer it with truth.
Remind yourself:
My God is for me, not against me.
If it’s a financial need and fear tells you that you will not have enough, answer it with the Word of God.
“My God will meet all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”
Philippians 4:19
“The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.”
Psalm 23:1
Memorise the promises of God.
Use them like a sword.
Stay single minded.
Stay focused on the Lord.
You may have to do this several times at first.
That is normal.
But over time the thoughts lose their power and peace begins to take their place.
God Sees the Whole Situation
God sees the whole situation.
He knows what has been done.
He knows what is unfair.
He knows the battles you are facing.
And He is able to bring justice and resolution in ways we cannot.
Scripture says:
“No weapon formed against you shall prosper.”
Isaiah 54:17
So take it to God.
When you feel angry, take it to God.
When you feel sad, take it to God.
When the thoughts come again, take it to God again.
Let God fight this battle.
Trust Him.
Because when a battle is bigger than you, it is never bigger than God
